Suppose you have ten cans of peas. The cans are open. In each can there are 100 peas. In the tenth can, each pea weighs only .9 grams. You do not know which can has the lighter peas, nor is it possible to tell with the naked eye. To help you, you have a electronic scale, however, the scale is not in great shape and you can only use it once to determine the correct measurement. Can you determine which can has the smaller peas?

Math is all about problem solving. It is taking what we know to then be able apply it and solve for the unknown. This problem requires problem solving because we need to be able to identify a path to solve this problem. We need to take clues that are given within the problem and put them together to find out which can has the smaller peas. |
